Research

Whether you are investigating your family history or looking for help with a modelling project, we are here to help. The museum assists hundreds of researchers every year, with questions big and small. If we cannot find an answer we might know someone who does.

For any research enquiries, including but not limited to questions, reproductions or interpretation services, please contact us.

Our catalogue

We do not yet have an online catalogue for researchers to peruse. Instead, you will need to contact the Museum to find out whether we hold what you are looking for. We maintain a very large collection of material related to the history of the Corps but there are gaps. Browse our Blog for featured artefacts.

Digital photo archive

You can view, search and purchase prints of a portion of the REME Museum’s extensive photographic collection via our online archive. Digitised as part of a joint project with Max Communications, these images represent only a small portion of our collection. New photos are added to the site regularly.

You can browse photographs like this one of 7 Aviation Flight through our digital photo archive.

Records of service

The museum does not hold service records for current or past members of the Corps. These are held by either the Army Personnel Centre or the National Archives.

For guidance on how to apply for records, please see the links below:

If you are struggling, please contact us for assistance.

Official records of service are filled with military jargon and abbreviations, making them confusing and difficult to understand. The museum provides a service to decode and interpret these documents. Our research can help you understand where your loved one served and the sort of work they were doing.

Our Corps Historian analyses your records, then draws on our extensive archive and his own expertise to create a written report that contextualises the subject's time in the Army. A fee of £99 is charged for this bespoke service.

To request an interpretation of a record of service, please contact us. Please note however, that there is a sizeable waiting list at this time.

Research service

Our staff are pleased to offer a research service to those seeking information about REME history. We receive lots of research enquiries, some more complicated than others. We aim to acknowledge your enquiry within a week of receipt and will be able to give you an idea of how fast we can respond at the same time.

Research fees are charged at £20 per hour. If a research fee is applicable, you will be quoted for the cost of the work, including any reproductions, before we get started. If your research is for commercial purposes, e.g. for a film project or a book you will publish, a consultancy fee may apply.

Click the links for further information on our Research Services (PDF, 0.2 MB) and our Reproduction Fees (PDF, 0.1 MB). To submit a research request please contact us, explaining how we can assist.

Viewing collections items

We are happy to provide access to items in the Museum's permanent collection that are not currently on display. Whether you would like to view your grandad's medals or examine a technical manual we are pleased to assist.

Viewings are by appointment only and are supervised by a member of staff. To request an appointment to view an item in our collection please contact us well in advance of your planned visit. Appointments may be made Tuesday - Friday, 10.00 to 16.30, dependent on availability.

Read this document for more information on Handling Archival Material (PDF, 0.4 MB). Different procedures may apply if you are viewing items from the object collection.
