War Graves Project

Since 2022 we have been working to improve our records of REME soldiers who have died while serving, from 1942 to the present day. To do this, we are asking you, the public, to help us collect images of all REME headstones and memorials around the world.

The images are slowly being added to our 'Died in Service’ database which lists all those who have died whilst serving in the Corps and can be viewed in our Remembrance Gallery. The database contains 4242 entries, of which about half are listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website. The remainder died in the so called 'small wars' or through accident or illness.

With your help, we can start to piece together the stories of REME soldiers, which can be rather like doing a jigsaw when you haven’t got an image to go on. Each piece of information helps build a picture; what we don’t know is the size of the image and the number of pieces.

For example, an image received so far shows the grave of Craftsman Salmon. He was a Prisoner of War during World War Two in Japan and is buried at Labuan War Cemetery in Malaysia. He is recorded on our Died in Service Database and we have a tracer card in the REME Archives. Further information is available from the CWGC website. His memorial and the CWGC burial record show his religion as Judaism.

If you have a digital photo already and are prepared to give us permission for use and storage, or if you come across a REME commemoration during your travels and would be happy to take one, please contact us via email and send us your image(s) together with a date and location (including the name of the cemetery if possible).

Please include in your email the following statement: "This is my image and I give the REME Museum all rights to its use." All images will be acknowledged.
